Diversion Program Continues University Collaborations with Graduate and Undergraduate Internships to Support Youth and Families!

Now in its eighth year of working with universities, the Diversion Program continues collaborating with local educational institutions, providing Master of Social Work (MSW) and Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) interns to support the Diversion Program’s mental health services. These interns assist with individual, family, and group therapy for youth and families. Since 2016, nearly 40 dedicated social work interns have jumped in to make a difference. And the tradition continues! We’re excited to welcome two new Program interns who will be working with the Program through 2025.

Hello! My name is Yuliana Vasquez, and I am working on my bachelor’s in social work at California State University, Los Angeles. I have truly enjoyed this major, gaining valuable insights from various courses that have shaped my understanding of social dynamics and community needs. My passion for social work stems from a deep desire to create a world where gratitude and happiness flourish. Many families struggle to seek help or access vital resources, and I aspire to bridge that gap. At HPAL, I have gained significant insights into the youth community and families in Boyle Heights. This experience has highlighted the importance of culturally competent approaches tailored to the specific needs of the community.  One of the things I value most about my internship at HPAL is the significant impact we can make in the lives of both youths and their families. By fostering strong family dynamics and building community connections, we can help youths navigate challenges more effectively, boosting their confidence and resilience. My plans after I graduate are to continue with my master’s degree in social work and be able to work with little kids.

My name is Briana Godina.

I am a second-year Master’s student at California State University of Northridge. I am pursuing Social Work because of my deep love for seeing others succeed, especially when the odds are against them. All throughout my life, I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do; I just knew I wanted to help individuals in need and make a genuine impact. I have also always had an interest in HPAL/LAPD and the idea of working within the community to support community members in overcoming obstacles that are out of their control, so when coming across this internship with HPAL, I knew this was the placement for me.
