Jasmin Arizpe is a 16-year-old student from Boyle Heights. Jasmin is the oldest of four and comes from a single-parent household. Raised by her dad, Nicholas, Jasmin struggled to connect and communicate, exhibiting disrespectful behavior and leaving home without permission. Her dad sought help through the HPAL’s Diversion Program. Both Jasmin and her dad successfully completed the Program’s 12-week Get-It-Straight training classes; her dad also completed the 10-week Parent Training component. After completing the Program, Jasmin not only improved communication with her dad but also worked on her confidence and self-esteem. Jasmin has now started the process of enrolling in the LAPD Cadets Program and will be joining their next class this upcoming year. She continues to work on herself, excels in school, and hopes to one day attend college.
Jasmin shares, “The Diversion Program helped me a lot, and I think people should know about it. Kids should hear about this program in school and parents who want to help their kids should also know about this program.”
Nicholas, Jasmin’s dad shares, “I recommend this Program and the classes they offer. It helped me as a parent to listen to my children and learn to be patient. It taught me to be there for my children, and asking for help is a way to do so.”
