Exploring Identity: LCA Students’ Journey to Discover the Latina Look

Discover the inspiring journey behind LCA’s latest student-produced documentary, a project that began as an exploration of a viral makeup trend but evolved into a powerful exploration into the history of resilient women in their own community. The documentary was produced over the course of an 8-week summer media camp, where students learned how to successfully pitch ideas, conduct research, interview experts, and master various film techniques. They also created individual films that told personal stories of who they are.

While their initial goal was to define what the Latina look represents, their interviews with community members led them to uncover stories of strength, identity, and cultural pride—stories that deeply resonate with their own lives and experiences.

Life. Camera. Action! (LCA) is an innovative media program that teaches students, ages 12-17, how to use technology and digital media to explore issues that matter to them and their community. We strive to be a platform that empowers young people to use their voices for causes that represent their interests and feelings. This documentary is a testament to the creativity, dedication, and voice of the next generation of storytellers, and we couldn’t be more proud.

Special thanks to LA Plaza de Cultura y Artes their Associate Curator, Esperanza Sanchez and Visual Communication Manager, Mario Hernandez for being interviewed and allowing us to film inside their permanent exhibit, LA Starts Here!
